The University of Massachusetts Amherst football program became a member of the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and a member of the Mid-American Conference. Football games have been held at existing McGuirk Alumni Stadium for the past 45 years. However, the existing stadium and team facilities were not adequate to support the team in its move to the new Conference. The Training Facility and Press Box structures are detached additions to the existing McGuirk Stadium built in 1965. The designers sought to provide a modern facility that was sympathetic to the mid-century modern aesthetic of the existing stadium. The new structure captures the same forms as the stadium and is clad in stone panels, which complement the existing concrete structure yet provide a more refined aesthetic.
