Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Uses GIS to Manage Marine Minerals

Big Data comes to life via Quantum Spatial’s eGIS application, developed for the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.  The Marine Minerals Information System (MMIS), enables the management of offshore marine minerals.  Cherie Jarvis, Quantum Spatial eGIS Practice Lead, describes the process of transforming vast quantities of disparate data sources into a powerful tool that is reshaping how BOEM manages marine resources.  Read the entire article on ArcNews.

Creating the MMIS, which began in 2014, was a formidable task. It covered the OCS along the US federal waters of Alaska, the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, and the Gulf of Mexico. Other challenges included the scope and volume of information, variable data formats, and the number and type of data sources that Quantum Spatial had to incorporate into the eGIS. QSI also needed to coalesce all available data into a standardized data model, then develop tools for viewing, analyzing, and managing the MMIS data.
