Quantum Spatial to Demonstrate Virtual Substation Monitoring at CEATI Spring Conference

Autonomous Robotic Platform Featuring LiDAR, Thermal and Multispectral Sensors Enables Remote Change Detection in Substation Environments

St. Petersburg, Fla. March 2, 2018Quantum Spatial, Inc. (QSI), the nation’s largest independent geospatial data firm, today announced that it will showcase its substation monitoring solutions at the CEATI International Spring 2018 Industry Conference. The company will demonstrate its Autonomous Roving Inspection System (ARIS), which integrates a robotic platform and sensing equipment to help utilities remotely identify problems occurring in the substation environment. QSI also will discuss applications of remote sensing technology, including topographic and bathymetric LiDAR for hydropower generation.

“With far-reaching assets that provide critical services to millions of residents and businesses, electric utilities are continually seeking innovations to improve reliability and reduce costs,” said QSI CEO Robert Hickey. “During the CEATI Spring Conference, we look forward to sharing how QSI’s advanced remote sensing and analytics can benefit utility operations through efficient condition assessment, monitoring and change detection.”

WHAT:    CEATI International Spring 2018 Industry Conference

WHEN:    March 6-7, 2018

WHERE:    Westin La Paloma

    Tucson, Ariz.

DETAILS:     QSI Booth 59

QSI will show the capabilities of ARIS – a robotic platform, featuring on-board spectral, thermal and LiDAR sensors, a precision navigation system and hazard cameras – that is used to perform fine-scale spatial mapping and acquire a wide array of data from substations.

The robotic platform can be used for physical and spectral change detection, object detection and identification, corrosion monitoring, liquid and gas leak detection, and thermal monitoring. With this information available from a central control dashboard, utilities can effectively monitor substation environments remotely, saving time associated with driving to physically inspect sites and enabling earlier detection of potential problems.

QSI experts will also be on hand to discuss applications of topo-bathymetric LiDAR, a technique that uses specially equipped lasers to scan through the water column, mapping underwater terrain in 3D. Topo-bathy LiDAR simultaneously maps the land and seafloor. Accessibility to dams, penstock, storage ponds and river shorelines make comprehensive inspections of hydro assets an operational and personnel safety challenge. Topo-bathy LiDAR covers large areas of infrastructure efficiently and cost effectively, enabling comprehensive, reliable and repeatable condition assessments on hydro assets.
