Quantum Spatial to Showcase Topobathy and Hydrography Innovations at International LiDAR Mapping Forum

Quantum Spatial, Inc.(QSI), the nation’s largest independent geospatial data firm, today announced that three of its LiDAR experts will be featured speakers at International LiDAR Mapping Forum (ILMF), which takes place February 5-7 in Denver. QSI also is exhibiting at the event, sharing its expertise in LiDAR data collection and analysis for a wide variety of uses, including topobathymetric analysis of riverine environments and elevations studies of a variety of terrains.

“LiDAR has proven valuable for many applications, including environmental protection and disaster risk assessment, mitigation and clean up. Now advancements in sensor technology and new platforms, such as drones, are further expanding the capabilities of LiDAR,” said Bob Hickey, CEO of QSI. “QSI is pushing the boundaries of science and application using LiDAR as a foundational platform. We are working with public and private organizations to use hyperspectral data in parallel with LiDAR, improving raw accuracy and resolution of the national hydrography data and developing autonomous robots for various applications. These activities continue to enhance and support our mission to discover richer details about our nation’s geography and leverage these insights to positively impact lives.”

WHAT:    International LiDAR Mapping Forum (ILMF)
A technical conference and exhibition showcasing the latest airborne, terrestrial and underwater LiDAR, as well as emerging remote-sensing and data collection tools and technologies for asset management, civil infrastructure, coastal zone mapping, emergency services and disaster response, land and natural resource management, and urban modeling.

WHEN:    February 5-7, 2018

WHERE:    Hyatt Regency Denver

DETAILS:     Pre-Conference Workshop: LAS 1.4 and Beyond – Modernizing the Point Cloud– February 5 – 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m.
Evon Silvia, PLS, solutions developer for QSI, who also serves as the chair of the ASPRS LAS Working Group (LWG) will lead a lively discussion of the LWG’s new vision for the world’s most popular point cloud storage format: collaborative online editing, open discussion, faster release cadence, developer subscriptions for easier adoption and ExtraByte standardization.

Product Preview: Quantum Spatial Company Overview
February 5 – 9:45 a.m. – 10 a.m.
QSI Senior Vice President Russell Faux will explain how the company combines its deep experience and cutting-edge technology to acquire data, and leverage analytics to uncover insights that help mitigate risk, better manage resources and drive profitable growth

Mapping Complex Riverine Environments with Topo-bathymetric LiDAR: Project Design Considerations for Multifunction User Groups
February 6 – 11:45 a.m.-12:10 p.m.
Colin Cooper, a technical domain expert for QSI, will discuss a collection of high-resolution topo-bathymetric LiDAR data the company completed over 160 miles of the Willamette River in the Pacific Northwest for U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers partners. The project generated elevation data to support modeling efforts in areas of flood plain management, water quality and aquatic habitat. Cooper will provide an overview of the acquisition planning and execution, refraction processing methodology, sensor selection, and results, including depth, coverage, and accuracy.

    USGS Elevation-Hydrography Pilot Study
February 7 – 1:30 p.m.-2:05 p.m.
Dr. Andrew Brenner, a senior program director for QSI, will provide an overview of the company’s work developing local scale hydrology from QL2 (2 point per square m) LiDAR. The presentation will share how to develop a high-resolution hydrologic network from LiDAR using a series of spatial analysis tools and explore the challenges and benefits of this new level of detail for hydrologic mapping. Dr. Brenner also will discuss how attribution from the existing National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), automated tools and photo interpretation can be used to develop an updated and more accurate fully attributed NHD that will be part of the future of water modeling. This presentation will include experiences from both QSI and Dewberry, which collaborated to pilot this dataset development for the USGS.

    QSI Booth #415
QSI will highlight data collected following the recent Montecito, Calif., mudslides and other projects using the REIGL VQ-1560i, an ultra-high performance, fully integrated and calibrated dual channel airborne mapping system. QSI is the only company in the United States that owns and operates this system.

In addition, QSI will showcase the scientific research on topobathy it has conducted for the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and provide insights into how its Autonomous Roving Inspection System (ARIS), a robotic platform with spectral, thermal and LiDAR sensors, can be used to perform fine-scale mapping and acquire remotely sensed data.
