NV5 is designing an amphibian passage system along a 1,200-foot section of Waterloo Road in Allamuchy Mountain State Park and Waterloo Village in New Jersey. The project, managed by Denice daCunha, PE, Supervising Engineer from NV5’s Parsippany, New Jersey office, will create a new passage that will offer a long-term solution to vehicle-caused mortalities threatening a significant local population of amphibians.
Every spring, amphibians move from a forested hillside (where they spend most of the year), to a vernal pond (a wetland area without fish – ideal for breeding) on the other side of Waterloo Road. With this new passage, these amphibians, which are small and slow moving, will be able to move safely between their habitats without entering the pavement that divides them.
