Brown Hall Norfolk State University

What was old is now very new: Brown Hall is the longest-standing structure on campus. As the new home of both Mass Communications and Math departments, this project was more than just a physical renovation — the University envisions this new facility as a transformative gateway to innovative approaches to teaching.

New active learning environments are virtual, collaborative, team-based, flexible, mobile and connected. With an eye toward maximizing outcomes, custom workshops were conducted with faculty. These sessions were designed to help prepare them to best use the new spaces in the context of emerging trends in pedagogical approaches.

The facility features a computer testing center, classrooms, conference rooms, large lecture halls, computer labs, and a Black Box Theater. Integrated network systems include AV, CCTV, Wireless Card readers (PIM), Wireless Control, BMS, Room Scheduling, and Wall Clocks.

The TV studio offers facilities not just for traditional video production, but also supports classroom instruction. Content created in the TV production studio can be edited in the video and audio editing labs and voiceover studio. Systems include specially configured computer workstations, analog and digital video decks, appropriate audio and video monitors, and a high-speed network port in each suite.

The 350-seat Proscenium Arch Theater hosts events from multimedia presentation to theatrical performances. Multiple pan-tilt-zoom cameras capture video for later viewing as web streams, and they can be controlled by the instructor via a simple touch panel with video preview capability.
