Ernest E. Tschannen Eye Institute

To serve at the forefront in collaborative optical research for blinding eye diseases, UC Davis Health expands and renovates their existing facility into a state-of-the-art eye center. Not only will the institute house some of the best eye care in the country, the facility will train ophthalmologists and vision scientists to be the new leaders in optical care.

In phase one, NV5 created thorough audiovisual, IT/Telecom, security, and acoustic criteria for design. In phase two, NV5 continued to represent the owner regarding AV infrastructure design, developed the detailed AV systems for bidding, and oversaw AV-related construction and systems installation. The building is designed to embrace a bring-your-own-device culture into the center for the staff. In conference spaces, personal laptops can be used for presentations and teleconferencing.

When it comes to medical practice, excellent IT/Telecom systems that are accessible 24/7 is a priority. Hard wired infrastructure allows physicians to access the campus-wide area network, and WiFi is available building-wide for patients and physicians.

With the importance of confidential nature of medicine, security and safety is maintained by using intrusion and duress alarms, video surveillance, and Radio Frequency Identification patient wrist tags. The patient’s information can be entered into the local security system where it will then be associated with a wirelessly monitored wrist tag, giving physicians the ability to trace the patient’s whereabouts within the facility.

Acoustics were taken into consideration when designing the atmosphere. Sound isolation for every room gives the patients speech privacy in exam rooms, while vibration control limits undesirable noise from mechanical systems such as air conditioning, with special care given to rooms with teleconferencing capabilities.
