Cheryl Antonio, Health Physicist with NV5, recently chaired the working group finalizing the N13.25-2022 Internal Dosimetry Programs for Plutonium Exposure – Basic Requirements. This standard provides criteria for the design and implementation of an internal dosimetry program for plutonium. These criteria include the design and setup of a bioassay monitoring program, the selection of individuals to receive monitoring, the interpretation of bioassay monitoring results, the assessment of internal dose, action levels for medical intervention, assessing intakes associated with contaminated wounds, estimating uncertainty associated with assessed intakes, and numerical thresholds for medical intervention.
In November, Cheryl will meet with the HPS Standards Committee to Chair the review of N13.39-2001 Design of Internal Dosimetry Programs. The last time the reference was formally reviewed was in 2011. This reference standard provides criteria for the design and implementation of all internal dosimetry programs. Adherence to this standard meets and exceeds regulatory requirements of the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
