Characterization Support for a Radiological Facility in California

NV5 was contracted to support the free release of a radiological facility at a confidential client’s California facility complex. This release was needed to remove the facility from the State of California Radioactive Material License and support the sale of the facility to a commercial client.

NV5 developed the following documents to support the release of the building:

  • Data Quality Objectives
  • Characterization Survey Design Process
  • Building Survey Plan
  • Supplement to the Historical Site Assessment

Following acceptance of the planning documents, NV5 staff mobilized to the site to survey the building. As part of the survey process, a complete background study was performed. This background study provided the basis to release the building using the State of California requirement that residual contamination be “Indistinguishable from Background.” NV5 completed the survey including surveys for gamma, alpha, and beta emitting radionuclides and surveys for fixed and removable contamination.

Final reports were developed for the background study and the release survey for use by the client in its license termination request.
