Oversight of Naturally-Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) remediation

NV5 served as the technical representative for the City of Vernon, California for the remediation of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM, thorium-232 and uranium-238) at a retired chemical plant.  Historical chemical production operations had resulted in elevated NORM levels in the fill of settling ponds and sumps at several locations on the site, both on the surface and at depth.  Both scanning surveys and soil sampling were performed to ensure that derived concentration guideline levels (DCGLs) for the site were met.  Technical staff reviewed all plans, approaches, implementation, and technical products for the project.  Fill from the ponds was removed and transported offsite for disposal.  The site was successfully remediated and released.
