Main Gate at New York State Fairgrounds

Clearly visible from the I-690 Freeway in Syracuse, the Main Gate for the New York State Fair serves as an icon to identify, locate, and provide access to the fairgrounds.

The lighting design features multiple layers of lighting treatment to support the utility of the gate for the thoroughfare of people, ticketing, and admissions, as well as the spectacle of the gate architecture itself to inspire and evoke amusement to echo the many varied types of events that occur on the grounds.

Recessed downlights within each archway provide warm lighting to clearly demarcate each pedestrian passageway and to provide staff with sufficient illuminance to perform their tasks safely and comfortably. Small form-factor stem lights illuminate the ‘New York State Fair’ sign clearly and evenly to help with identification and wayfinding. All columns and edifice pieces are treated with a system of dynamic color-changing LED luminaires to add color, movement, and excitement to the structure. Millions of color combinations and dynamic color chases are possible, with color for each architectural element able to be controlled independently.

A lighting control system with astronomical timeclock and touchscreen interface allows for the storing and recalling of lighting scenes and dynamic events. Scenes have been built with color combinations chosen to celebrate various holidays, fair events, user groups, and sports teams which fair personnel with access can recall or write new scenes when needed.

The ticketing area received a new, network-based audio system primarily used for announcements, queuing, and background music
