Located along Interstate 5 near the California border is the Siskiyou Rest Area and Travel Oregon Welcome Center. The site was chosen for its panoramic vistas and safe freeway access. Over the span of eight years our designers prepared conceptual landscape designs for the 18-acre site that complied with stringent county and city land use conditions and site design requirements. Our landscape architects were challenged to irrigate the site using non-potable water obtained through rights granted by the Talent Irrigation District. The constructed irrigation system included an intake pump at the source, a booster pump in the tank to distribute water to the mainlines and valves, and a combination low-flow and pop-up spray system needed to establish the new plantings until they become self-sufficient, all while withstanding heavy pedestrian use. The multi-phase construction required the civil engineering and landscape designs to integrate across multiple stages with different general contractors. The first phase included early mass grading, paving and utility construction, followed by the building construction, hardscape plazas and landscape improvements in the second phase.
