NV5 was the Prime Consultant for this FDOT District 2 project located at the Ft. George Inlet in Duval County.
The project was initiated in response to a safety concern where low flying seagulls were being struck and killed by motor vehicles traveling along A1A. The gulls, flying between a nearby estuary and freshwater ponds on the other side of A1A, often took a flight path that conflicted with the traveling public.
To provide a safer environment for all, NV5 developed plans for a project that included a dense planting of trees, palms, and ground covers to alter the flight path of the birds.
In addition, to provide an appropriate contextual fit with the surrounding dune environment, the design included sculpting of the ground plane to mimic the nearby dunes. Stakeholders for this project included the FDOT District 2 and the Florida Park Service.
