The UF Herbert Wertheim Laboratory for Engineering Excellence is an addition to the current Nuclear Sciences Building and substantial utility design and relocation efforts. The project consists of approximately 84,000 sq. feet of state-of-the-art research and educational environment, bringing together interdisciplinary faculty, undergraduates, and graduate students in collision spaces that compel collaboration.
Located adjacent to the Reitz Union interwoven with pedestrian walkways and intersections, this building provides a centerpiece for the face of innovation on UF’s campus. University, private, and government funds were used to provide state-of-the-art, high-technology instruction and research lab space to better address the educational needs of a growing enrollment; expand instructional program opportunities, including recruitment and retention; foster industry partnerships; and expand interdisciplinary research funding.
CHW coordinated with Grimshaw and UF Planning, Design, and Construction (UF PDC) for the hardscape, landscape, and irrigation design services. Our Survey + Mapping, Planning + Design, Landscape Architecture, and Civil Engineering teams came together to transform the project site, keeping in mind the strong connection to the community through high visibility laboratory space and enhanced egress areas for bikes and pedestrians.
