- Sustainable transportation design can reduce miles traveled, promote mass transit, maximize use of existing transportation infrastructure.
- Increase efficiency, link land uses, reduce travel time, reduce CO2/greenhouse gases, & increase safety/enhance emergency response.
- NV5 planned 9 miles of HOV lanes & designed auxiliary lanes on Hwy 1 through Santa Cruz, CA using sustainable transportation principles.
- The auxiliary lane work improved Level of Service, enhanced safety, added ramp metering, & bike lanes & sidewalks to the new overcrossing.
- The AUX project also included bus stops at ramps; park & ride lots and sidewalks constructed w/sustainable carbon sequestering concrete.
- Impacts to water courses crossing the AUX project were minimized using bioswales and water quality BMPs to reduce 1st flush contaminants.
- CO2 is reduced by decreasing idling, facilitating mass transit, reducing Hwy speed to 55, planting trees & promoting alternative fuels.
- Use of virgin materials is minimized by recycling asphalt & aggregate base & crushing concrete/recycling rebar, salvaging signs/guardrails.
- NV5 completed a comprehensive sustainability assessment during the planning of the Hwy 1 HOV project and tested 12 pilot STARS credits.
- STARS: the Sustainable Transportation & Access Rating System helped the Hwy 1 HOV project identify which project elements can be improved.
- STARS clarified which project elements & potential strategies produce the greatest access, climate & energy, & cost-effective benefits.
- STARS was also used to identify & incorporate elements for project planning to better meet performance goals over the full life Let NV5 do a sustainability assessment of your transportation project and increase the sustainable and environmental features.
