To commemorate National GIS Day, Ms. Caroline Coholan’s 3rd grade class, from Llewellyn Elementary School, visited the Portland office for some hands-on experience in geography. The class of 30 students learned about aerial photography, bare-earth elevation models, and contour mapping by participating in interactive sessions where they constructed terrain models, matched aerial photos with LiDAR images, and created topographic features in our interactive sandbox. During lunch, Quantum Spatial’s Annie Trambley and Zach Powers presented the basics of LiDAR and how our analytics help preserve sage grouse habitat.
STEM education is a goal for every teacher. Not only did our time with Quantum Spatial on GIS Day bring to life cool science and technology, but our interaction with the amazing staff showed that life as a grown up who pursues their passion can be engaging, rewarding, and fun!
Thank you,
from Ms. Coholan’s 3rd Grade!
This is the second annual field trip for Ms. Coholan’s class, and we’re looking forward to many more visits in the future!
