Quantum Spatial to Speak at 20th Annual JALBTCX Airborne Coastal Mapping and Charting Workshop

Quantum Spatial, Inc. (QSI), the nation’s largest independent geospatial data firm, today announced that Colin Cooper, senior scientist; Evon Silvia, solutions architect and chair of the ASPRS LAS Working Group; and Andres Vargas, LiDAR technical expert and calibration lead, will deliver presentations during the 20th Annual JALBTCX Coastal Mapping and Charting Workshop, June 4-6, 2019 at the University of Notre Dame.

The Joint Airborne LiDAR Bathymetry Technical Center of Excellence (JALBTCX) Workshop is an annual event that brings together individuals from government agencies, private firms, and universities who are global leaders in hydrographic mapping and services. The workshop provides updates on national coastal mapping programs and offers participants the unique opportunity to collaborate with a wide range of colleagues working in this field. Russell Faux, senior vice president at QSI, said about the event:

Mapping Florida Keys Reef Tract Post Hurricane Irma
Thursday, June 6 – 11 a.m.
Cooper will discuss QSI’s work for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) using topo-bathymetric LiDAR to map 2,135 square miles of the Florida Keys Reef Tract impacted by Hurricane Irma. To promote NOAA’s “Map Once, Use Many Times” mission, project specifications were updated to adopt LAS 1.4 and develop additional derived products, such as normalized seabed reflectance and total propagated uncertainty. Cooper will explain how these additions accommodate data accessibility and integration through standardization, while also allowing for high-resolution mapping and characterization of benthic habitats.

Improving the Management and Operational Efficiency of Topo-bathymetric LiDAR Collections Using Web GIS
Thursday, June 6 – 11 a.m.
Vargas will discuss an ArcGIS online application called Quick Look Viewer (QLV) that QSI developed for the NOAA Florida Keys project. Such a topo-bathymetric LiDAR project results in a large volume of diverse data layers. In addition, project teams collect supporting information, such as imagery, turbidity, survey control, ground checkpoints, environmental conditions and field observations. These create challenges for project management, including getting timely feedback on the quality and coverage of bathymetric data and ensuring efficient use of field resources. Vargas will share how the QLV enables storing, managing and visualizing all data sets with a single online map interface. He also will discuss how the QLV effectively compresses the timeline between data collection and review of preliminary results by facilitating project partner collaborative review and allowing direct access to all spatial and temporal data.

LAS 1.4 R14 & Domain Profile Updates
Thursday, June 6 – 3:15 p.m.
Silvia will lead a breakout session that summarizes the changes in Revision 14 (R14) of the LAS 1.4 specification published on March 26, 2019, as well as the proposed updates for v2 of the Topobathy LiDAR Domain Profile (LDP). This interactive session will produce a standardized vendor-neutral blueprint for producing enhanced LAS 1.4 files for the topobathy community.
