Quantum Spatial Remote Sensing Analytics Expertise to be Featured at 2019 Trees and Utilities Conference

Quantum Spatial, Inc., the nation’s largest independent geospatial data firm, announced that its use of remote sensing and analytics for vegetation management will be featured during the 2019 Trees and Utilities Conference, taking place September 10-12 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Quantum Spatial will be exhibiting at the conference, offering presentations at its booth on topics such as wildfire analytics, tree species identification using hyperspectral imagery, cycle- and condition-based vegetation management, and funding for remote sensing initiatives.

Wildfire Analytics

  • As climate instability continues to intensify, climate conditions and weather events become an increasingly important variable in utility risk planning. Only by understanding both the probability of a weather event and its impact, can utilities develop intelligent risk mitigation strategies. Quantum Spatial will showcase a comprehensive fire-risk model co-developed with Pyrologix. The model combines both the likelihood of a vegetation-caused fire along electrical lines, and the behavior and subsequent impacts of a utility-caused fire starting at any given location across the system. The presentation also will feature the pros and cons of different fuel and fire modeling approaches, and how utilities can leverage new or existing remote sensing data sets to improve these models.

Tree Species & Health – Hyperspectral Identification

  • Understanding where problematic or high-risk tree species are located in relation to utility assets enables utility stakeholders to better mitigate risk. Quantum Spatial uses hyperspectral imagery combined with real-world identifier trees and custom machine learning pipelines to model and map the location of “danger trees” for utility clients. This presentation will focus on Quantum Spatial’s methods and results, and explain how utilities can leverage tree species information with analytics, like growth rates and tree health, to create a more robust risk profile.

Cycle-based vs. Condition-based Vegetation Management

  • The goal of condition-based maintenance is no longer a “future state” goal for utility vegetation management programs. Utilities across the globe routinely deploy remote sensing technologies – paired with advanced modeling techniques, machine learning methods and work management software – to realize the benefits of increased system reliability, safety and return on investment. This presentation will review the foundation technologies and systems that make condition-based maintenance possible. Quantum Spatial will discuss the challenges and successes of recent system wire deployments within leading North American programs, and show how traditional survey methods can be integrated with multi-phase remote sensing systems for a truly state-of-the-art aerial patrol.

Funding Strategies for Remote Sensing Analytics
