Starting on August 25, Caitlin is hosting I Love Anchorage’s instagram feed for a week. Follow along to glimpse snapshots of her daily routine on and off the job.
Caitlin Vernlund hails from our Anchorage office where she does a little bit of everything as she manages Quantum Spatial’s Alaska projects. Her daily routine involves everything from writing proposals, meeting with clients, working with data acquisition, attending conferences and hosting internal nacho bar parties. Her favorite project to date is our high density LiDAR analysis on the North Slope.
“My position at Quantum Spatial is pretty versatile and allows me to work in areas I enjoy most.”
She enjoys working with every one of her officemates as well as collaborating with co-workers from the Lower 48. Caitlin relishes the challenges associated with remote sensing in Alaska. Because of Alaska’s large size and northern latitude, Caitlin and her fellow co-workers have a narrow timeframe to map in snow-free conditions making the summer months, with nearly 24 hours of daylight, work intensive. Project prioritization and weather forecasting are necessary to optimize where and when to conduct mapping surveys.
“Our office is also unique in the fact that we work on a municipal airport, where we are connected to the heart of Alaska transportation, our office basically sits in an airplane parking lot!”
In her free time, Caitlin loves exploring the Alaskan outdoors. The Chugach State Park is a favorite hiking destination a mere 20 minute drive from home, and neighboring communities like Hope, Homer, Girdwood, and the Matanuska-Sustina Valley provide ample opportunity for weekend adventure. Additionally, Caitlin enjoys spending time on her yoga mat and the country dance floor.
