Beltway Operational Improvements Project

NV5 is providing management services for this $81 million project to improve safety and traffic operations along the SR 58 corridor east of SR 99 to Cottonwood Road and at the SR 99/Ming Avenue interchange. This project consists of operational improvements to interchange ramps and the development of auxiliary lanes, retaining walls, and sound walls.

These improvements are elements of the Bakersfield Beltway system. They are stand-alone features that provide independent utility and logical termini, and will improve the safety and operations of the existing transportation network.

Specific improvements include braiding the SR 99 to eastbound SR 58 branch connector with the South H Street off-ramp to eliminate the short, non-standard weaving length between the two interchange ramps; auxiliary lanes in advance of the eastbound SR 58 off-ramp to Union Avenue and in advance of the westbound SR 58 off-ramp to Chester Avenue; realigning and rebuilding the Chester Avenue on-ramp to eastbound SR 58 to accommodate a ramp metering system; rebuilding the Union Avenue off-ramp from eastbound SR 58 to provide a second lane for storage and to accommodate an extra turn pocket; rebuilding the Cottonwood Road off-ramp from eastbound SR 58 to provide a second lane for storage and to accommodate an extra turn pocket; realigning and rebuilding the Ming Avenue on-ramp to southbound SR 99 to include a ramp metering system; rebuilding a portion of the Ming Avenue on-ramp to northbound SR 99 to provide standard shoulder widths and improve an existing lane drop to meet current standards; and building sound walls along both sides of the SR 58 corridor between SR 99 and Cottonwood Road and along northbound SR 99 between the Belle Terrace overcrossing and SR 58.
