Groundwater Remediation

Over the past two decades, NV5 has completed five Master Service Agreements (MSAs) with Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) for environmental services at LAWA properties located at Los Angeles International (LAX), Van Nuys (VNY), Ontario International (ONT) and Palmdale Regional (PMD) Airports. These services include Phase I and II ESAs, groundwater investigations, jet fuel abatement, hazardous material surveys, construction specifications, storm water monitoring, environmental construction responses, Underground Storage Tank (UST) removal, remediation oversight/contractor management and closure, hazardous waste and materials training, industrial hygiene investigations and specialized technical services.

The most recent projects include groundwater investigation activities for a jet fuel release from a valve box at Terminal 2 and a jet fuel release from a Terminal 1 valve box north of Terminal 2. The project started with a review of past environmental documents, including Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), a soil vapor investigation and a groundwater investigation going back to 2010. NV5’s additional investigation included compiling all past environmental documentation and developing a conceptual site model (CSM) to determine what additional investigation requirements were needed to close out the activities at Terminals 1 and 2. This included workplan submittal to the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board (LARWQCB), drilling/soil sampling, 2 groundwater well installations and developments, and groundwater monitoring for the 2 installed wells and 4 additional wells at the Terminal 2 apron, as well as indoor air monitoring in the customs area and providing a report. NV5 had to obtain area shutdown requests (ASRs) for closures for various gates at Terminal 2 for each aspect of field work, conduct all field activities at night, obtain a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) permit for the drilling in the runway area and obtain multiple runway closures for the groundwater well installed in the runway area. In addition to the Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons / Volatile Organic Compounds (TPH/VOC) analysis, groundwater samples were also analyzed for perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) and pentadecafluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), chemicals used in flame retardants.
