NV5 provided environmental services for 22 miles of US 285 roadway improvements in southeastern New Mexico. The roadway passed through the towns of Loving and Malaga. Traffic improvements were needed to respond to increase traffic volumes due to growth in the oil and gas industry. NV5 prepared the environmental sections of the Phase 1-A/B location study. NV5 also provided public involvement support. The existing 2-lane roadway was reconstructed to a 4-lane roadway. At the Black River, New Mexico Department of Transporation (NMDOT) proposed constructing a new 2-lane bridge next to an existing 2-lane bridge. NV5 delineated wetland and conducted a biological survey. A cultural resource survey was also conducted. NV5 worked with the engineering team to develop a bridge design that avoided the Black River channel. Mitigation measures were developed to minimize river impacts. NV5 prepared categorical exclusions to provide environmental clearance for the project.
