NV5 provides a full suite of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and microgrid services to ensure energy assets are optimized for both grid-connected and islanded operation.
BESS and Microgrid system modeling and simulation including:
- Onsite energy generation, storage, and utility tariff modeling
- Advanced lifetime project financial performance modeling
- Optimization of the BESS to achieve financial goals while keeping costs and maintenance to a minimum.
- Resiliency modeling for minor grid disturbances and long-term grid outages
Oversight of all aspects of BESS and microgrid projects, including
- Feasibility and financial modeling
- Incentive and utility interconnection application and management
- Competitive procurement with BESS and microgrid-specific requirements and criteria
- Proposal analysis. vendor selection, and contract negotiation
- Design review and technical construction support
- Commissioning and Closeout verification and oversight
- Asset management during operation
Battery Energy Storage
We suggest you start with a feasibility study to identify the financial costs and savings for a BESS at your site. BESS functions typically include demand charge reduction, energy arbitrage (tariff management), optimized self-consumption, or provide grid ancillary services.
NV5 encourages the BESS procurement and contract to include owners project requirements and performance guarantees that define energy guaranteed capacity, guaranteed availability, allowable charge/discharge cycles, and O&M services. NV5 offers commissioning verification to ensure the BESS is tested to satisfy the functional, permitting, and incentive requirements before it is placed in operation. We provide Asset Management services to ensure the BESS is maintained, receives regular software updates, is tested to determine if it is operating within the performance guarantees and if the functional requirements should be updated based on changes to utility tariffs or grid ancillary services.
Microgrids/Resiliency
Microgrids reduce energy costs, similar to a storage only system, and keep critical infrastructure operational during utility grid outages. The microgrid generation components (like solar photovoltaic, fuel cells, battery energy storage, or traditional generating sources) are controlled by a microgrid controller. A portion of the BESS in a microgrid is typically reserved for an outage and is not available for daily energy cost reduction functions. NV5 can determine the reserve energy needed to meet your resiliency goals and the economic value of resilience for your business or service.
