About HB 1257:

Here’s What You Need to Know

Starting in 2026, most existing commercial buildings (including schools and dormitories) in Washington State over 50,000 SF will be required to meet certain Energy Use Index targets (EUIt). Any building owner not in compliance by the target dates will incur a penalty of $1/SF + a $5,000 fee per year.

Starting Early

Although this is still a few years away, there is an Early Adoption Incentive (EAI) program beginning July 1, 2021. If your building is 15 points or more above the EUIt, you may be eligible to receive an incentive up to $0.85/SF. The Department of Commerce, in partnership with utilities, have only allocated $75 million available for those that adopt early. As more buildings start to seek compliance, funding for EAI is likely to run out, and expert resources and supply chains will be more constrained.

How NV5 Can Help NV5’s team of qualified Energy Auditors can help by evaluating your facility and determining if your building is compliant. NV5 will then submit your documentation to ensure compliance with HB1257. Should your building not be compliant, NV5’s team of energy managers, commissioning agents, and design engineers can assess the best solution to bring your building into compliance and then provide the solutions to reduce your energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
